How to care for premium fabric so it actually lasts
A 220 GSM polo shirt built with colour retention certification and anti-microbial treatment is a significant step above most clothing. But even the best fabric is shortened by poor care. The garment does its job. You have to do yours.
This guide covers everything you need to know to get five or more years out of a Wayora product. The instructions are simple. The difference they make is not.
Washing — the most important step
Cold water, always
Hot water breaks down fibre structure faster than any other single washing decision. It causes shrinkage, weakens elastic fibres in the collar, and accelerates colour fade. Wayora fabrics are certified for colour retention — but that certification was tested under proper care conditions. Cold water (30°C or below) is the standard.
Inside out before it goes in the machine
Turning a garment inside out before washing protects the outer surface from friction and abrasion inside the drum. The outside of the fabric — the part people see — stays sharper for longer.
Gentle cycle, not regular
A regular wash cycle is designed for heavily soiled cottons. A polo shirt or hoodie worn for a day does not need that. Gentle cycle with reduced spin speed protects the fabric structure. Most modern washing machines have this setting.
Use a mild detergent
Harsh detergents with strong chemical compositions degrade anti-microbial treatments over time. A mild liquid detergent, used at the recommended quantity, preserves the fabric’s performance features for longer.
No fabric softener on performance fabrics
Fabric softener coats fibres to create a soft feel. On performance fabrics with moisture management properties, this coating can block the pores in the fabric structure that make moisture wicking work. Skip the softener. The fabric is already engineered to feel good without it.
The way you wash a garment matters as much as what the garment is made of. Premium fabric and poor care is still poor care.
Drying — where most damage happens
Air dry, flat or hung
The tumble dryer is the single biggest enemy of premium fabric. Heat causes fibre contraction and structural breakdown faster than any other factor. Air drying — laid flat on a clean surface or hung on a wide hanger — preserves the shape and structure of every garment.
For Wayora hoodies at 380–400 GSM, lay flat to dry rather than hanging. The weight of a wet hoodie stretched over a hanger can distort the shoulder structure over time.
Out of direct sunlight when drying
Drying in direct sunlight can bleach colour from fabric over time, even on garments with colour retention treatments. Dry in shade or indoors near a window. The UV protection in your polo shirt protects you from the sun. It does not fully protect the fabric dye from extended direct exposure during drying.
Do not wring
Wringing a garment twists the fibres and can cause permanent distortion in the weave structure. Gently press water out and lay flat. That is all.
Storage — the overlooked step
Fold hoodies, do not hang them
Heavy garments like the Wayora 380 GSM hoodie should be folded and stored, not hung. Hanging a heavy garment for extended periods stretches the shoulder fabric and distorts the neckline.
Hang polos and T-shirts on wide hangers
Thin wire hangers create pressure points at the shoulder seam that leave visible marks and eventually stretch the fabric at those points. Wide wooden or plastic hangers distribute the weight correctly. Your polo collar stays flat. Your shoulder seams stay where they were cut.
Store clean, never dirty
Storing a garment with sweat, skin oils, or food residue accelerates fibre breakdown. Even light wear should be aired out before storing. Even if the garment does not smell, the residue is there. The anti-microbial treatment in Wayora garments handles this in wear — but storage with residue over time is a different matter.
What to avoid entirely
- Bleach — degrades colour and fibre structure permanently
- Dry cleaning for everyday polos — unnecessary and the solvents can affect performance coatings
- Ironing at high heat on performance fabrics — if ironing is needed, use a low heat setting through a pressing cloth
- Leaving wet garments in the machine for extended periods — causes odour that is difficult to remove even from anti-microbial fabrics
- Washing after every single wear if the garment is not soiled — air out and re-wear. Overwashing shortens any garment’s life.
The return on proper care
A Wayora polo shirt cared for correctly will look and perform the same in year three as it did in month one. The colour retention certification is real. The anti-microbial treatment is durable. The GSM and fabric structure hold.
But they hold under the right conditions. These are simple conditions. Cold wash, gentle cycle, air dry, wide hanger. Ten minutes of care per week that extends the life of the garment by years.
That is the return. And at a price of Rs. 1,999 for a polo that performs at this level, it is worth doing right.
